Reboots. Why does this term drive fan boys crazy? Are they
afraid of change, loss, deformation of story and character? Or are they afraid
that change may surpass the characters and the universe that surrounds them? Here
within the next few paragraphs you are about to witness a full review and a
perfect example of a popular franchise rebooted that was handed down from a
Titan developer (Capcom), to an independent self-sustaining company; Ninja
theory. We will discuss story, graphics and control to see if the lives of our
ever so popular loud mouthed, over confident, pizza eating rocker demon slayer
get the right make over it deserves. If not, it may burn from the fueled rage
of the fan boys inner demons. Read on I dare you, because even the Devil may
cry.
DMC:
Devil may cry is a game where the protagonist, Dante, is a warrior/gunslinger
who is pitted between a thousand year war which involves angels and demons. His
parents play a vital role with the back drop of the story. Unlike Dante back in
2001, he is half angel, half demon, and all bad-ass. And please, hold the pizza
with the extra anchovies and give me a side of hookers with menage a trois sauce
and a bottle of Jack Daniels to wash that down with. And that’s not only coming
from me, it’s the intro to the game.
From the beginning Dante is wondering aimlessly with a clouded past.
Angry and traumatized not knowing his place in life until he has a run-in with
a psychic named Kat who involves him with an anti-government group called the
“the Order”. This is where the story catches my attention like a moth to a
flame. Capitalism, media, consumption, sex and amongst other things are tools
and weapons of the Demon king (Mundus) and his minions. And no this game was
not made by Mormons or Catholics, it was made by people who want to kick
politics in the teeth causing riots and mayhem in the streets while playing
punk and heavy metal music as their battle cry.
RENT IT!
The music rocks in this game. Especially if you are a
fanboy. It still has the heavy metal like tone but now its mixed with
“Aggro-Tech” brought to you buy Combi-Christ. It sets the mood oh so quite
fiendishly…Once you start accomplishing various levels and goals you will see
how Dante has a “Don’t give a shit” attitude to a more “Heroic” role once he
finds his place in this chaotic universe as he takes down demons one by one. All the action mainly takes place in “Limbo”.
It’s a behind the curtains type of reality where the Demons and devils reside
masquerading the real world. Time is almost at a standstill once entering
dimension causing awesome interactions sequences in the levels to come.
With its graphics, story, history, music, and frantic battle system this game can
make an addict out of any fan boy or newbie. But unfortunately, this drug comes
in a very small pill with minor side effects. The aiming system can be quite
clumsy at times. It auto locks to the closest enemy when the most dangerous
ones are behind or airborne. This limits
your options of executing attacks. Also I found out that the game glitched on
two boss battles. One actually was in my favor where the enemy just sat there
waiting to change tactics while I was smacking it like a misbehaved monkey. The
other glitch was totally the opposite. It took place in the last boss
confrontation. Supposedly, I lasted longer than the game expected (30 minutes
because I’m such a badass), meanwhile missing a very crucial move I should have
done the first 5 minutes of battle. This caused my enemy to become nearly
invincible and the only way to end it is dying or restarting. Another aspect is the length of the game. I
rented it and beat it within 2 and half days with chores to do and a girlfriend.
I checked my in-game records and it said that I spent 15 hours of gameplay, but
I swear it felt like 8. I don’t know if it has to do with the action or
gameplay but time flies if you’re having fun I guess. Or maybe I ripped the
fabric of reality and I was sucked into limbo while playing….just maybe.
The graphics in this game are creative and very imaginative.
It runs off the “Unreal” engine but it has its own distinct mechanics. There
are no frame rate issues during battles when the enemies fill the screen or
cut-scenes. Where the graphics really shine are the level creations and boss
battles. The levels range from a colorful acid trip carpet ride to a warped and
dark nightmare twisting itself a difficult path for our hero. From the upside
down media prison showing the traffic lights in place of starry skies, to the
club inferno with the background base beat equalizer taunting you to move your
feet to carry on. Blood is on the dance floor, tons of it! These levels manipulate
themselves throwing obstacles against the player causing the ground to change
at any moment with every step you take.
Character animations are all motion captured and the background helps
fulfill the narrative aspects of the game at times. This gives a plus to
immersion.
The combat system is very fluid thanks to the weapons combo
system, and perks/abilities. Some weapons make a great comeback like the
rebellion and the sexy and beautiful Ebony and Ivory (Dual Pistols). Fan boys
will love to see that the “Style Points” system is back and untouched. This
style system rates your actions from attacks, combos, parries, dodges, and
weapons of a different variety without receiving damage. This system awards you
points for your success to unlock abilities and perks to further improve Dante.
If you execute the same combo over and over again you will not receive the same
points as before and you will need to change your tactics. It’s like telling a
joke. When you say it for the first time it’s funny and you will receive some
laughs. But once you say the same joke again, It loses its value and eventually
becomes stale. This forces you to initiate every battle differently making
every encounter almost a unique one. Bravo. The more style, the more points
awarded, the faster you become a lethal demon slayer by utilizing your
well-earned abilities. Perks range from
double jumping, improving damage for certain weapons or technique to buying
health and magic items for those desperate times of need. The ¨Devil Trigger¨
has been changed thoroughly. Unlike Dante (2001) where he used his inner blood
line to transform into an actual demon, this time around everything is thrown
into chaos and the enemies are hurled into the air unmercifully while your
damage in boosted and your health regenerates at the same time. This gives
Dante a chance to do some samurai like moves jumping from enemy to enemy in
mid-air like an old kung-fu movie.

DMC: Devil May Cry is a fan boys dream come true. Plus this
game is newbie friendly as well. This
Dante gives his own personality with his style and the classic one liners that
can be taken a little more seriously by holding the extra cheesiness. Just too
bad this hack and slash adventure ( with its minor glitches) is short lived but it does show a promising future due to the end conclusion of the game. And talking all about capitalism and anti/government with awesome music, I leave you with this video from one of our editors "Personal" collection. Enjoy.
